With me writing new stuff onto this blog now, it give me time to show you a series that I was thinking about for awhile now! It's the Rewritten series, a series where I explain some flaws in a certain episode and rewrite them in an attempt to make it better! For the first episode, why not rewrite a SpongeBob episode that I had an unpopular opinion, The Great Patty Caper! If you're interested, then read after the jump break!
What is This Series About?
The description that I gave at the beginning is just a brief summary.
For the full details, I will be going through some cartoon episodes that has some flaws that I wanted to fix! So, it's like if I were in charged of writing for that episode. Most of these episodes are going to be ones that I don't like which is going to be good for me and maybe not for you. However, the main purpose of me making these series of posts are to show off the flaws that I had with that certain episode as well as to show off my creative side in it. Now, I am aware of this kind of genre isn't really original at all but unless you are making an animation, game, or a drawing, everything that you seen on the internet isn't original so I guess it's fair.
The format of the Rewritten series will start with the episode's summary, then the flaws that I had with it, then me brainstorming some ideas to fix it, and finally, the finished rewritten story that I made and the judgement of it.
There are some rules that I have to follow because if I don't, then I might as well make a parody of the episode then actually rewriting it.
- Remain the character's personalities as close as possible
- Adding or changing scenes are fine but keep it close to the theme of the episode
- If I am adding or removing characters, it shouldn't derail the episode too much
The first rule is that I have to keep the character's personalities as is which is kinda going to be challenging if I happened to don't like either that version's character or it in general. The second rule is that while I can change certain scenes or add some in, I cannot change what this episode is supposed to be about. Because otherwise, what's even the point of making that episode in the first place? I may make a separate post about cartoon episodes that I think should have never been made. And the last rule is that if I am adding or removing characters in the episode, it shouldn't derail the episode too much. What that means is that it's okay to do them for a joke or to fix a flaw that I don't like. But removing an important character that I hated is not okay and will most likely change the whole episode's plot as a result. Again, this is just a rewritten episode, not a parody.
The final thing to not is that this is just a fan-made story in the end. So, you don't have to agree with my rewritten story or even my opinions on the flaws on that matter. It also means that it's not going to be an official cartoon episode any time soon so don't and I mean DON'T claim that my fan creation as the real and better version of the official stuff. I don't want to have any copyright issues for something that I just made as a fan creation. Hopefully, any rewritten stuff that I made and every post in that matter falls under fair-use.
What is the Cartoon Episode for this Episode?
With that introduction out of the way, let's move on to the next topic. For the first episode, it's going to be a bit controversial because the episode that I'm pick to rewrite is The Great Patty Caper from SpongeBob SquarePants! If it wasn't for my file size issue, I won't be explaining why I don't like this special here! But we will get back to my unpopular opinion later.
Right now, I will tell you what is this special's all about for those who haven't seen it yet. The official episode summary is about SpongeBob, Patrick, and Plankton solving a mystery on a train. However, I do prefer what the SpongeBob Fan Wiki (Real Name: Encyclopedia SpongeBobia) has as an episode summary more which is about the key to the Krabby Patty secret formula going missing. It actually explains the special more than the official version.
What Went Wrong with The Great Patty Caper?
But we are not here for me to complain about how bad official episode summaries are compared to fan-made ones, we're here to for me to explain what went wrong with The Great Patty Caper (in my opinion of course).
I do love mystery episodes because I can create some speculation of what will happen or the twist that could happen! But it doesn't work if it the "twist" ended up being predictable and that's the main problem that I had with this SpongeBob special! The setup of a good mystery was just there when the key goes missing but it turns out that Patrick had it all along and the episode changed to being another predictable Plankton Stealing the Formula one! It also doesn't help that the twists seems to just be there for some funny gags and serves no purpose to the actual special! What?! Usually when that happens, there should be a big twist saving up for the end but like I said earlier, it's just Patrick who misplaced the key. 😑
Luckily for you guys, The Great Patty Caper is far to being in my Top 10 Worst SpongeBob Episodes list. I was just left disappointed with this special.
Fixing the Flaws
And this is where I am going to see what I could do to fix the flaws!
- The Twists: While I could have remove the twists that they had, I figured that I keep those expect for the Patrick Key one because that was stupid even for him. Instead of that, why not create an one time character who is secretly trying to steal the Krabby Patty Formula for his own restaurant?
- Plankton Stealing the Formula: Even though that I would have love to remove that running gag from the special because of it's overused in the Dark Era, I have to keep it for the sake of Plankton's character. As compensation, him getting the key will be given to a different character and now, he has to chase that people to the get it before it gets to the safety deposit. His motivation won't be ruined by doing that.
- Other: Honestly, everything else stays the same with small edits that does along with the other changes that I made before.
With that brainstorming session done, it's time to show you The Great Patty Caper Rewritten! (By Mixed Star Master)
Rewritten Time!
The first part of this special remains the same for the most part. The first change happens when SpongeBob and Patrick meets a male fish called Matt on the train after meeting "Nanny" and "her baby". Matt seems to be a nice fish that is going to the next train cabin to meet someone there.
The episode continues as normal until the next change happens. After failing to figure out who took the key, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Plankton went back into the train to see Matt again who strangely didn't went outside with the rest of the cast. During a conversation with him, the key falls under Matt's pants and Plankton realizes this. It turns out that Matt is the boss of his own burger restaurant at a far away place! But it is in danger of shutting down due to the poor burgers that they served there. Once Matt watched the Bikini Bottom Special Report from the TV (just don't question how his restaurant receives news coverage from the Bikini Bottom, it's all for convenience), he noticed that getting the Krabby Patty secret formula means that his business would be saved!
After hearing his backstory, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Plankton tries to get the key back from Matt which it's chase scene is similar to the actual one. The next changes comes in when Matt lures the main characters into the train engine and disconnects it from the rest of the train. But being desperate, Plankton jumps onto Matt's pockets before he did that. The train engine going out of control remains the same but it shorten down so that we have time for Plankton and Matt trying to get the key for their own purposes. Ultimately, it turns that Matt didn't know where the formula is at but Plankton knows where it is so they temporarily join forces into getting that formula.
The rest of the special goes on as normal expect with Matt involved but the outcome still remains the same though.
Conclusion
And that was how I would rewrite The Great Patty Caper. All I did was making the climax of it be less predictable. Well, I guess you call the Matt Twist being predictable also since he was an one-time character after all. But at least it's still better then just Plankton stealing the formula for a billion time!
For my own judgement, I have to say that this story was honestly not that bad for the first rewritten episode! Worst case scenario being my rewritten story being completely different but luckily, that didn't happen.
So I wonder what you think of this rewritten story? It was my first one by the way. This was Mixed Star Master and I will see you guys later with the next post, bye!
